This is a good pre-k-healthcare-resource-manual. Along with the immunizations and lead testing, a physical is also required within 30 days of the start of the program. You might also want to check pre-k-immunization-requirements

On Thursday evening, September 4, 7PM, there will be a brief meeting for parents at the library. If your child is now 4 years old or will be attending school next year, please join us for a brief orientation meeting. We will discuss the goals for the school year, collect your applications and answer your questions.

Ms. Carey Pooler will be available that evening for all to meet. Ms. Pooler is a certified pre-k teacher and has agreed to be the lead teacher for Bright Beginning.  Ms. Kenda Butterfield will also be with us this year to lend a hand!

The Indian Lake Library is pleased to once again host its family literacy program, Bright Beginning.  All four year old children are welcome.  Their parents and /or care givers are also welcome to enjoy the literacy activities and stories each week.

Classes will begin September 15 and will be held three days a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 11 am.  No transportation is provided.

The program is free to all children in the Indian Lake Central School District.  Mondays and Fridays, the children should be brought to the library at 8:30.  On Wednesdays, the program will be held in the kindergarten classroom.  Fridays, parents and caregivers, please schedule your time to join us for the last hour or so of the day.

Dear Families,
Today is just the Beginning!  It was my intent, through the Bright Beginning Family Literacy Program, to initiate a strong partnership between the Library, the School and families and caregivers of children who are just starting out on their path to education.

I hope you think this program has benefited your entire family.  We want you to continue to discover the potential of the Library and become part of our core of “regulars”.  Books, videos, performances, readings are all a part of a rich cultural education.  This is your community library and we want to be the place in your every day life for education, information and culture.  We welcome your suggestions and hope we are responsive.

This summer, there will be special programming for  children using the NYS Summer Reading Program Theme, “Catch the Reading Bug”.  Look for reading rewards and give aways, “buggy” science programs on Wednesday nights and story telling- fun activities that will help keep your child learning and growing.  Saturday Story time at 11am will continue through the summer.

Although your child will be in  pre-k at Indian Lake Central School, remember to visit the library.  We will be working on literacy bags that you can check out, just as you check out books and videos, that will contain books, crafts and materials to follow up on the skills your child has developed in Bright Beginning.

As you look forward, know you will be challenged over these next several years to continue to grow with your child’s education.  No, it’s not the way it used to be!  We will work with you to meet the family literacy challenge.

During February our theme was the Construction Zone, and the children explored the worlds of construction. The children made length, height, and size comparisons. They added three new letters and sounds to their letter knowledge (B,b, M,m, and R,r). In oral language, they learned to recognize and use positional words, while in math they used numbers in measurement. In print awareness they learned to recognize and name the beginning, middle, and end of books. They also began to compare and contrast story structure.
February was also a month of holidays, so the children learned about Ground Hog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day. For Valentine’s Day they made a special project for home. This project provided a lesson in teamwork, by sharing materials, helping one another, and learning to be patient with each other.
The children, Mrs. Kenda, and I hope all of you had terrific holidays, and to the “big” students and their families a fantastic winter vacation.

Please do not send cookies or raisins!  Good old, unflavored water seems to be popular!

Look in your child’s book bag each day after school. It’s fun to this with your child.  They can tell you about things you find in the school plastic bag and think about their school day.

The only thing that should come back to school in the bag are library books, stop signs, supplies borrowed,  and their completed work.   It can be used for any notes you want to send as well.

Coloring, reading, and other work sent home is meant to be fun and reinforce skills learned each week. Repetition, reading and rhyming should be enjoyable. We all know it’s hard for many four year olds to concentrate when they are tired or hungry.
